Cricket: A new bowler’s average
by Murray Woodman on Aug.27, 2009, under Know Idea
As I was watching the recently completed Ashes series this year I began to ponder the issue of how a bowler’s average is calculated. Is the current a bowlers average the only measure we can use? How can we accommodate the quality of the batsmen dismissed. I think that the current method could be augmented so that we have a more insightful way of discriminating between bowlers.
How to take a good photo
by Murray Woodman on Nov.22, 2005, under Know Idea
Here are a few ideas I picked up from browsing images in Flickr. I just went for a bit of a hunt through the interesting images until I found a good image and then documented the arresting feature. What I ended up with was a list of hints to try to remember next time I’m out and about taking photos.
If you have any photographic techniques then I would love to hear about them in the comments.

Diamond rock

Apparently extremely flawed diamonds are almost worthless as they have no ornamental value. Not sure if they have industrial value. Some of them get to large sizes – 5 carets. It should be possible to use these low quality diamonds in a decorative manner. more…

I just went to visit the diamond exhibition at the Museum of Natural History in London. The Millennium Diamond was on display along with a number of others. This idea is not new – it is a rehash of a piece of jewelry I saw at the exhibition. The jewelry in this case was a number of coal pieces about the size of a large marble wrapped with diamond studded braces. The pieces were strung together to form a necklace. more…
